Anson County, North Carolina in the 1770s
A broad backcountry county of farms, ferries, courts, militia musters, Baptist meetinghouses, slavery, bad roads, and revolutionary argument.
Looking around
You stand in a broad county, not a single town, with the Pee Dee River1 as the surest landmark. The old courthouse is near Mount Pleasant on the north bank2, while the later Wadesboro crossroads is not yet the county seat. Fields and cabins lie along rivers and streams1, where farms of one to two hundred acres1 are common. Roads are rough enough that travel to court can mean crossing many bad water courses5. A route ordered from the frontier toward the coast is meant to move goods outward, but much business still depends on river land and ferries. Around you are Scotch-Irish and German settlers2, enslaved Black people, and a few free people of color. Public life gathers at court days, elections, musters, and meetings. A Baptist congregation is already meeting near Rocky River9, and politics is unsettled after the Regulators and during the Revolution.
Work
Farms on creek land
The daily economy was agricultural: agriculture was the economic backbone1 of Anson County, and the best chances lay on land along rivers and streams1. Many holdings were one to two hundred acres1, large enough for mixed subsistence and market farming.
Faith
Dissenting meetinghouses
Baptists were visible before and during the decade: Rocky River Baptist Church9 had a meetinghouse by 1772, while Lilesville Baptist Church7 and Deep Creek Baptist Church7 are dated to 1777 and 1778. Church life here was not simply the established Anglican pattern of the coast.
Law & power
Court, militia, taxes
Public authority meant courthouse, sheriff, muster, and election: petitioners complained of travel to county courts, general musters, elections, and other public business5. The Anson County militia8 was formally organized by the Provincial Congress in 1775.
In the air
Regulation to independence
The decade opened in the shadow of the Regulator movement3, whose complaints included excessive taxes, dishonest sheriffs, illegal fees, scarce money4. By 1776, Anson was part of the revolutionary political world represented at Halifax, where North Carolina moved toward supporting independence10.
What people feared
Rebellion and war
The Battle of Alamance4 in 1771 showed how local tax protest could become armed repression. After 1775, militia service could pull Anson men toward Moores Creek Bridge8, Cherokee country, Georgia, or South Carolina.
Home & table
County, not town
A traveler should not picture Wadesboro yet: the town of Wadesboro did not yet exist2 in the 1770s. The known public focus was the courthouse near Mount Pleasant on the north bank of the Pee Dee River2.
Money
Cash was scarce
As across the Regulator backcountry, scarce money4 made taxes and fees dangerous. A farmer rich in goods could still face confiscation of property4 if hard currency was demanded.
Who lived here
Settlers and slavery
The backcountry population was growing from Irish Protestant and German2 migration. By 1790, the county’s people included 828 enslaved people6 and 41 other free persons6, showing that slavery and a small free Black population were part of the county’s social order.
