Hurricane Township, Bradley County, Arkansas in the 1860s

Work

Corn, stock, and plantations

The county economy was agricultural¹, with corn the principal crop¹ and vegetables, beef, and pork filling out subsistence and market life. At the start of the decade, 2,690 enslaved people¹ labored in the county’s plantation system.

Faith

Shared meeting places

Religious life was organized through scattered congregations: Shady Grove Baptist dated from 1847³, Presbyterian work at Johnsville began in 1857, and First Presbyterian Warren organized in 1858. In Warren, Presbyterians met in the Methodist building³ after war stopped their church construction.

Law & power

Courts and slaveholding power

County authority centered on Warren and the courthouse world that had begun when Circuit Court met at Hugh Bradley’s house⁴. Political power before emancipation was tied to slavery: Josiah Gould represented the county at the Secession Convention and owned forty-four enslaved people¹.

What people feared

War without a battlefield

The war did not bring a listed battle inside Bradley County’s later limits, but Federal raids carried off horses and enslaved people⁴. The longer danger was collapse of ordinary farming: by war’s end fields were weed-choked and poor¹.

Home & table

Scattered rural households

The record found here is county-level, not household-level; no online source found gives Hurricane Township’s houses or exact 1860 township population. The visible pattern is rural and agricultural, because Bradley County’s economy was agricultural¹.

Who lived here

A slave society

In 1860, Bradley County counted 5,698 white residents and 2,690 enslaved people¹. That means ordinary life here was shaped by bondage, ownership, and the sharp legal line between free white residents and enslaved Black residents.

Roads & news

Post, river, and roads

Messages and official notices moved through county institutions and the post: the first post office was south of Warren⁴. Heavy produce could move by water, since crops were marketed down the Saline River to Moro, Louisiana⁴.

Money

Thin cash, hard recovery

The sources opened do not give local wages or store prices for Hurricane Township. The strongest economic fact is the wartime damage: by the end of the Civil War, agriculture was in poor condition¹.
