Wilton, New Hampshire in the 1890s
A small Souhegan River mill town, tied by rail to Boston, with farms, factories, churches, fires, and county poverty close at hand.
Looking around
Stand in East Wilton and turn toward Main Street: the new Town House1 is already in use, raised after the fires and spared by the 1885 blaze. Close by are shops, banks, and rebuilt Main Street blocks1, because fire has remade this village more than once. The railroad is not a novelty; trains have run from Wilton toward Lowell and Boston since 18511, and a new station1 replaces the damaged old one in 1892. Across the Souhegan, the work world is plain: Colony Brothers’ stone-and-brick mill1,2 makes flannels and dress goods, while water power and steam2 drive other textile work. Up toward Wilton Center stand older meetinghouse ground, churches, and houses. Westward is the county’s public burden: the Hillsborough County Poor Farm1, still open until 1895, with dormitories, an infirmary, and a cemetery beyond the road.
Work
Flannel and twine
The most visible wage work is textile work: Colony Brothers’ mill makes flannels and dress goods1,2, while the Wilton Company makes cotton warps, yarns, and twines2 with water power and steam.
Law & power
Town meeting and county poor
Local public life centers on the Town House dedicated in 18851, but county power is visible too: Hillsborough County runs its Poor Farm in Wilton until 18951.
Faith
Several church worlds
Wilton has old Protestant roots, but by the 1890s it also has Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Maple Street1 and the Liberal Christian Church building dedicated in 18691.
What people feared
Fire remakes Main Street
Fire is not abstract here: major Main Street fires in 1874, 1881, and 18851 destroyed hotels, banks, library space, and commercial blocks before the decade begins.
Home & table
Schooling grows formal
Children and families see education become more institutional: Wilton built a high school in 1887, graduated its first class in 1888, and built a new brick high school in 18961.
Who lived here
A shrinking small town
This is not a big industrial city: Wilton falls from 1,850 residents in 1890 to 1,696 in 19003, even with mills, rail, farms, and county institutions.
Roads & news
Rail before telephone
News and strangers arrive by rail and post: trains link Wilton toward Lowell and Boston1, while telephone service and Rural Free Delivery do not arrive until 19001.
Money
Costs are hard to see
The mills leave better traces than household budgets; no digitized Wilton grocery, rent, or wage list for the 1890s turned up in this quick search.
